It's all a distant memory from another life—hazy and incomplete recollections—but they're there for him to scratch at the surface, like picking scabs. Like scars, these memories are unsightly reminders of something lost...[break][break]

Plucking it from his belt, Adrian turns over Furor's pokeball in the palm of his hand: An ordinary device, but weathered and tarnished, belying its age—and the pokemon's experience.[break][break]

Much of his work on these routes had become what he knew best, scout and and sabotage. Paxton, along with the help of his Porygon, had managed to set up somewhere in the trees. Back against the trunk, and lying in wait while League forces moved around in secret. He was here to just hold the line for cover. [break][break]

A preemptive ambush of sorts to keep Rocket busy, while he relayed warnings to those he was meant to protect. He's already locked and loaded by the time Adrian Malcolm moves through. Similar grunts had passed by but veered away, moving out of range for the officer in question. [break][break]

Adrian isn't as lucky. "Hopper, we'll engage here then push west." he said ready to pull attention in the opposite direction of their comrades. He closes one eye to look, still before beginning to fire. Except the shot goes sideways into a trunk as a Tailow, bursts out of the trees, escaping a random Poochyena from below. "Shit-!" Thanks the gods CALLISTA MOON wasn't here. She'd never let him live this down.

Adrian is lucky not to be tagged as something whizzes through the air, striking a tree. The old, rotten wood is shredded in a spray of splinters. Adrian looks at the damage, then in the opposite direction—Where'd it come from!?[break][break]

He picks a tree—and isolates it from the rest.[break][break]

Adrian winds back his arm, allowing it to whip forward, pitching the ball towards where the shot might've come from, leaning with the throw and finding himself balancing on a single leg. As he returns to poise, the pokeball careening through the air approaches the tree, bursting open to reveal his gyarados, FUROR, clad in crimson..[break][break]

"TAKE IT DOWN, FUROR!"[break][break]

Its undulating body coils around the tree, struggling against the roots, but managing to topple it after wrestling it from the ground. The sound of groaning timber and a storm of leaves can be heard as the tree falls in the forest.[break][break]

"I didn't think you bastards were scummy enough to use guns," he called out in a taunting gesture, from a position of seeming safety, since he considered the threat subuded. He searches for the culprit...[break][break]

His approach is an unwitting saunter.[break]

Soemtiems, you just got lucky. That's Adrian Malcolm 's fate. He sees him start to pull out a pokeball and as his voice rings out, Hopper has already TELEPORTed them. Paxton roughly grabs at more branches, steadying himself as the huge red Gyarados falls forward on the old tree. Wood cracks and bark goes flying as the dual type takes down the tree he'd been hiding in. "Not another hypocrite." he said, not caring about his volume. He'd been forced into a battle now. He'd have to follow through. [break][break]

Paxton takes aim but there's too much in the way to get a clean headshot. So instead, perched somewhere to the right of the Rocket, he fires into what he thinks is the knee, ready to ruin his escape. He breathes quick, holds it, and takes aim. The shot is clean, but the red isn't noticeable. He can't tell well, even as Hopper tries to quietly move branches around for a better view at their opponent. [break][break]

The bullet, aimed at Adrian's right knee, makes a clean stab into his calve, carving out thick muscle in an instant. Normally he avoided this. It's more torturous a fight. But then he remembered what Rocket had done to Kanto, and what they nearly did to Hoenn, and the slight pinch of guilt evaporated. This was life or death. There's no room for any of that if he wanted to survive this. So instead, Paxton takes another breath, calms his thumping heart, and stared at his target with cold, uncaring eyes. [break][break]

Adrian feels it biting at his leg. Sharp and hot, it pierces through, but it leaves the bone intact. But his body crumples under the pain, and the torn muscle strains to hold the weight. He braces against a nearby tree, bleeding onto the forest. "Hrggh!" Shit, shit. It'd get worse.[break][break]

This is what he deserved, going it alone.[break][break]

He hobbles around the tree with a limp, leaving a trail to track. While he's gritting his teeth, slumped against the three, he can feel something wet and hot starting to gush. He is forced to rip at the hem of his shirt, tearing off a sizable strip of cloth... Improvising a tourniquet with a stick.[break][break]

It had to be tight. But if he took too long...[break][break]

Adrian once again reflects on Team Rocket's aspirations—whether it is worth risking himself in this way time and again.[break][break]

Can't think about that—not right now—!![break][break]

In the interim, Gyarados turned its attention back towards Adrian. To the scent of blood. His blood? It manages to catch sight of him, safe for the moment—but in desperate need of a reprieve.[break][break]

Slit eyes narrow, and nostrils flare.[break][break]

Lurching through the wood, it topples the trees in its path with a seeming ease, brushing past them hastily. As its headlong rush brings it to the tree Paxton resides in, its gaping maw punches through the foliage and branches, guided by its keen senses—BITING AT ITS PREY![break][break]

Wresting the tree and laying it low, Furor fells the old timber, and anything perched thereupon its tangle of branches... That which is caught in the vise of its teeth finds itself trapped, gnashed.[break][break]

Finishing up his bandaging with the time Furor could afford him, Adrian would test putting his weight on the leg, but found it becoming increasingly numb past the knee. Enough.[break]

His target drops and the bullet casing tumbles away as he expertly slid another one into the chamber in its place. It's not the best conditions but he'd make it out. Sometimes a little bit of a fear was all you really needed. And if this one took off running, so be it. He'd cut them down when he got back up in to the trees. [break][break]

As he holds aim, the shadow of the bright red Gyarados looms. Hopper chirps suddenly, and Paxton just barely has time to shove off his perch as the beast crashed into the branches. As he free fell, the shiny Porygon moved him once again. This time, he's on the ground panting lightly at the raise in his heartbeat from the scare. [break][break]

"Take a break." he said to the normal type as he reached for another pokeball. The pokeball is relatively normal, albeit with a couple of strange stickers attached. He throws out the bright red and white and out comes a cloud of dark smoke. The haze is slow to disappear, but the pokemon inside doesn't wait. Coniebear rushes to the hunt, darting out of the black haze to find it's prey in the dark red pokemon slithering its way on land. She doesn't wait for gravity to bring it to her, rushing forward to CRUNCH it once she reached it. [break][break]

Adrian staggers out from behind the tree, in time to see Mawile flanking his Gyarados. With a sharp stare and knitted brows, he prepares to speak, but not before Furor reels from the chomp of Mawile's gaping mouth. But he kept his eyes out for the other trainer, and that weapon...[break][break]

He would have to learn to fight this war that way, if the League was going to do likewise, carrying armaments. It only made sense.[break][break]

Furor would find it difficult to catch the Mawile in this tangle of overgrowth, but Adrian could see an opportunity—one to rid them of both problems.[break][break]

All in one fell swoop—[break][break]

"FUROR, BRUTAL SWING!"[break][break]

Even in its anguished throes, Furor understood.[break][break]

Executing his plan in that moment, Gyarados would use its gangling, hulking span of muscles to writhe and thrash, swinging its weight around in a way that would not be easily quelled—much less endured—from above or below.[break][break]

He could target them both like this.[break][break]

It was a much needed, swift resolution.[break][break]

Adrian knew enough to stand back as its lumbering figure lashed out, knocking over trees and sweeping through the smoke...[break]

Paxton's turned around, unsure which direction the other Rocket was in. Connie was on the hunt, and he knew she'd stay on it. His situation was a little different. Especially without an extra pair of eyes on the scene. The Gyarados began to writhe, worked up by that suddenly screaming order. Paxton turned his head towards the source, locking in on his new objective and taking off. The red Gyarados still manages to react faster, winding up and swiveling a ton of weight around. [break][break]

But Conniebear doesn't hesitate, rushing in close towards the trapped beast. She shines, knowing she could- would stop this thing. Muscle slams into her and one of her heads latches on as she sparkles with IRON DEFENSE, while her body grew and split. A second head tries to stabilize her on the ground to stop the sudden attack. [break][break]

But her mega evolution isn't quick enough to deter the momentum already in full swing. She keeps her trainer from getting killed, taking some of the force. But Paxton is still whipped backwards, slamming into bushes and into the base of a tree. The weapon digs into him, heavy and painful as it rolls along with him. He's on the backfoot, quite literally. [break][break]

With effort, the officer gets to his feet and tried to keep the strap of his gear form choking him. He glanced, nothing the rainbow sheen on Conniebear's body and understood immediately what had happened. "Keep it at bay!" he ordered. He needed time to get up higher, put in some distance in this forest. He looked around, having lost track of Adrian Malcolm after being tossed several feet over. [break][break]

The Gyarados also begins to glow and grow with a roar of power that echoes across the tops of the trees. It's scream hits Paxton as he's trying to stand back up. Pulling himself upright and leaning on a tree in aching pain, he turned to see the giant red beast, water rippling around it. And his partner? [break][break]

Coniebear is grinning so wide her cheeks might split. All 3 heads bare their teeth and sharp fangs, the giant heads on her back drool and snap in excitement of the hunt. The Mega Gyarados makes a move for her and she meets it head on with arms open wide and hidden strength. The horrible sound of gurgling is loud enough for Paxton to consider returning the Mega Mawile, but then she squeezes hard, pinching at scales and muscle in her smaller arms as she initiated a PLAY ROUGH. [break][break]

Sometimes Connie was horrifying with how eager she was to handle her opponents. But that's why he loved her. She understood the risks. She didn't back down even with all the risks involved. Much like Paxton, they were both chomping at the bit to get on the ground and hunt down Rocket's. Now that they were mid fight, he didn't have the heart to take her out of it. She hated that more than a loss. [break][break]

Earth kicks up as Coniebear is pushed back and she shook trying to stop and dissipate all of the Gyarados' momentum while her mouths flailed trying to find air. Shaking and digging scars into the peaty ground, she tried to slam the mega evolved beast back into the ground where it belonged. [break][break]

Conniebear's screams echo through the forest as white hot fire sears her body, inextricably merged with metal. Even with all her defenses it still hurt like a bitch. But the Mega Mawile does not relent, slamming the ground and force chunks of earth to fly up as she tried to entomb the Gyarados with a sudden ROCKTOMB. [break][break]

Paxton is nowhere to be found because he's been busy trying to find their assailant. The only person that could call off the other beast before they both trying killing each other. But the foliage is too thick, and his attention is too taken by the screaming of his partner. It sounded awful and he resists the urge not to pull her out, keep watch on her from above. [break][break]

Surrounded by their stony gaol, Gyarados can do little but succumb to its wounds. Furor would surely fall.[break][break]

In the throng of the inferno, the streak of red light siphoning his fainted Gyarados is not easily discerned, and instead Paxton and Mawile would be met with the roiling fire running wild around them. Adrian was poised then to take advantage of their blind spot, he felt.[break][break]

Howitzer's pokeball remained at his side. And yet he faltered that moment.[break][break]

As his fingers touched it, he recoiled.[break][break]

As the fire danced wildly against his eyes, Adrian felt the sting in his leg fading numb.[break][break]
